Restart in 2020

June 5, 2020 By Phillip Rosebrook Leave a Comment

2020 has been an incredible year so far.  The pandemic was very unexpected, and forced companies in every industry to make radical changes to their operations, plans and nearly every area of their business.  Many restoration professionals were able to benefit from these changes as they uncovered a new revenue source in cleaning covid-impacted businesses, while others simply had to adjust their processes for entering homes and businesses.  Many areas of the country experienced a very slow spring season, due in part to the stay at home orders and social distancing, while others were able to put together a very strong season.

It looks as though the summer season is starting with a “bang,” based on the recent rioting and civil unrest in many cities across the country.  Many cities experienced large amounts of physical damage in a short period of time.  I suspect that this unrest will continue throughout the year as we approach a very divisive election season.  This article is not going to comment on the nature of the unrest, not the causes – only to state likelihood of continued property damage.

As I write this, the third named tropical storm of the season, is brewing in the gulf and likely to hit land late this weekend or early next week.  Warm tropical waters appear to be favorable to hurricane activity which may lead to a larger than average year of damage.  The droughts in the west are continuing which may lead to continued wildfires.  I was surprised to see two different wildfire events this spring in Florida.  At least the tropical storm activity will lead to rain in areas of the country that need precipitation.

There are a lot of things that you cannot change.  The challenges with a pandemic, tropical weather, fires, droughts, hail, and more will affect your business and you have no control regarding these events. You can impact your response to outside influences and work to create a solid plan for your business that increases the likelihood of your success in uncertain times.

Business Mentors has been working with companies that are having record sales and profitability during these uncertain times.  Are you in control of your business, or simply a spectator as your business follows the winds of change?  Remember that you cannot change the winds, only adjust your sails in order to get to your destination.  Even worse, many companies don’t even have a destination – they just hang on hoping to get somewhere.
